The Sanitation Workers Wing of the Bharathiya Kovai Mavatta Podhu Thozhilalar Sangam urged the Coimbatore Corporation to continue the services of more than 300 special team contract sanitation staff. In a representation submitted to the Corporation Commissioner, the union alleged that the staff were recently informed by sanitary inspectors not to report for duty as their contracts had ended. It claimed that the decision was taken without prior notice. The union said the corporation currently engages about 4,650 contract sanitation staff, 1,208 DBC workers and over 300 special team contract sanitation staff. It stated that the special team personnel had worked during the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters to maintain sanitation services. The representation claimed that the special team staff belonged to a Scheduled Caste and that discontinuing their services would affect the livelihoods of more than 300 families. It also said the city already faces a shortage of sanitation staff and that removing the special team personnel could affect public health services.
