Sanitary workers engaged by Thoothukudi corporation staged a demonstration on Monday.The protest was led by All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), demanding protection of workers’ rights and condemning alleged irregularities by a private contractor.The workers demanded that the statutory minimum wages notified by the Thoothukudi District Collector for 2026-2027 be implemented for all sanitation workers. They also sought direct credit of wage arrears into the workers’ bank accounts.The protest organised by AICCTU Workers’ Rights Movement also called upon the corporation administration to immediately terminate its contract with the private company, alleging that it had been continuously involved in irregularities and corrupt practices in the Thoothukudi corporation.The protest held in front of the corporation office was led by AICCTU State Vice President T. Sahayam. Around 200 contract sanitation workers joined the protest, affecting sanitation services in parts of the city.Subsequently corporation officials held talks with AICCTU representatives. However, as the discussion failed to reach an amicable statement, the protestors continued agitation pressing for their demands.Following the protest, police security was intensified on corporation office premises.
