More than 1,000 sanitation workers took out a procession and staged a protest outside the Ripon Building, headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation, on Saturday, demanding that the State government address their long-pending demands.The workers raised slogans demanding the implementation of their demands. The protesters were prevented from entering the building, the gates were locked and security was strengthened.K. Bharathi, president of Uzhaipor Urimai Iyakkam, said the workers wanted the government to immediately implement the ₹832 daily wage promised by the Chennai District Collector. They also sought space for their union, which, they claimed, has a majority of sanitation workers as members.The protesters also demanded implementation of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s election promise to regularise contract workers who have completed five years of service.
