Conservancy workers of the Chennai Corporation have announced a massive protest with the support from political parties on September 18, demanding permanent government jobs and increase in wages.

As part of the next phase of the protest, the workers announced that they had submitted a letter to the police requesting permission to take out a rally from Rajarathinam Stadium to Langs Garden Road.

Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam is likely to conduct a meeting on Monday to discuss the package and welfare schemes for sanitation workers

On Friday, women conservancy workers gathered in Egmore near Maniammai statue. Police detained them and took them to a community hall in Madipakkam. Mumtaj, one of the workers, was admitted to the Chrompet Government Hospital.

At a press conference on Friday evening, S. Kumarasamy, Adviser, All India Central Council Trade Union said: “Deputy Mayor Magesh Kumaar has assured that outsourcing will not be implemented in Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar zones. The DMK government should ensure that the workers are treated with dignity.”
