Conservancy workers, who were engaged under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), continued their protest on Thursday with a rally in front of the Omandurar Government Estate and the Ripon Buildings premises.
State president of the Uzhappor Urimai Iyakkam, the group leading the protest, K. Bharathi, said the agitation would continue until the workers were allowed to meet the Chief Minister to present their demands.

Over 50 workers, some wearing uniforms provided by the private firm handling waste management in Royapuram and Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar Zones, were detained while attempting to submit petitions to MLAs and councillors, seeking reinstatement. All those detained were released by 6.30 p.m., the police said.
