The coalition argued that the increasing commercialisation of the area was denying ordinary residents access to a public facility that was originally intended for recreation and leisure.
A coalition of activists and civil society groups on Tuesday staged a protest at the Jabi Lake in Abuja, condemning what they described as the commercialisation and gradual takeover of the public recreational space by private interests.
The demonstrators, drawn from different advocacy groups, assembled at Jabi Lake before marching to the headquarters of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), where they demanded an immediate halt to what they called the privatisation of public assets.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters insisted that Jabi Lake, one of Abuja's major public recreational spaces, should remain accessible to all Nigerians rather than being turned into what they described as an exclusive commercial zone.
