Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Saturday led hundreds of protesters to demand an end to ongoing attempt by powerful politicians and land speculators to seize public spaces in Abuja, warning that residents would resist every effort to convert Jabi Park into private property.
The protest, tagged #SaveJabiPark, drew large crowds to Jabi Lake Park in Abuja, where demonstrators accused officials of attempting to privatise one of the few remaining recreational spaces available to ordinary residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
Addressing protesters during and after the march, Sowore declared that Jabi Park belongs to the people and not to “greedy politicians, their cronies, or land speculators.”
He insisted that public parks must remain public and vowed that residents would continue to resist an attempt by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Tinubu to take over the land.
