A police officer has been arrested after his colleagues saw him allegedly assaulting a man in custody at a precinct in the Greater Athens region and notified authorities.
A police statement said the officer was on supervising duty at the precinct on Saturday night, when the alleged incident occurred.
“Police staff who observed the incident immediately informed the Internal Affairs Service,” the statement said. “The officer was arrested … and taken to a prosecutor.”
It said the suspect was set free pending a preliminary judicial probe, while an internal police investigation was also ordered. His alleged victim was taken to a doctor for medical examinations.
