Strong northerly winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort continued to affect much of Greece on Saturday and Sunday, keeping large parts of the country under heightened weather alert.

Meteorologists said a broad wind corridor extends from the northeastern Aegean across the central Aegean and toward Attica, Evia and the northern Cyclades, reaching the southwestern Aegean and Kythera. In these areas, winds are blowing at 7 to 8 Beaufort, while much of the Aegean, Central Greece and the Peloponnese are experiencing 5 to 6 Beaufort.

Authorities placed large parts of the country under an orange alert due to the widespread and persistent strong winds. A brief weakening is expected overnight, mainly over inland areas, but conditions are forecast to intensify again on Sunday.

From Monday, winds are expected to ease slightly to 6 to 7 Beaufort in affected regions, marking a gradual improvement in conditions. Temperatures are also expected to rise, initially in northern Greece.

From Tuesday, warmer air masses associated with a heatwave over central Europe are forecast to move toward Greece in a weakened form. Temperatures could reach up to 38 degrees Celsius in some areas by midweek. Forecasters also expect localized thunderstorms, while the seasonal “meltemi” winds are likely to gradually subside.
