The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) has put an end to a pending issue that has been preoccupying the insurance market and the insured for months, by publishing for the first time the Annual Adjustment Index (EDA) for long-term health insurance policies.

This is the index provided for by a 2025 law in order to constitute the objective reference point for the annual adjustments of premiums, ending the disagreements regarding whether the increases imposed by insurance companies actually reflect the evolution of health costs.

In the index, ELSTAT separates for the first time the effect of aging of the insured from the actual increase in the cost of health services. According to its analytical data, the total annual adjustment index for 2024 increased by 6.24% when the age change of the insured is also taken into account. However, when the effect of age is removed, the increase is limited to just 1.25%.

Even more revealing is the data for long-term health insurance contracts, that is, the contracts that have been the subject of the greatest controversy in recent years. There, the annual change in the index in 2024 was 7.23% when age is taken into account, while without the age effect it is limited to 1.76%.
