An investigation is underway into the cause of a power blackout aboard a passenger ferry that ran aground shortly after departing the island of Milos in the early hours of Saturday.
The ANEK ferry Kissamos, carrying 1,246 passengers and 108 crew members on its Piraeus-Souda route, suffered a total loss of electrical power shortly after leaving Milos at around 3.10 a.m. while sailing in northerly winds of force 5-6.
The blackout caused the vessel to run aground in shallow waters.
Following an underwater inspection by a diver, the ferry was able to free itself and return safely to the port of Milos, escorted by a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat.
