The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has approved amendments proposed by the Ukrainian delegation to a resolution on transnational repression, addressing Russia's abuse of Interpol mechanisms and international wanted notices to persecute individuals for their pro-Ukrainian activities.
Maria Mezentseva, head of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE, told an Ukrinform correspondent about the decision.
"One of the final and most important resolutions of this session concerned transnational repression. We succeeded in securing amendments addressing Russia's misuse of Interpol mechanisms and international wanted notices," Mezentseva said.
According to her, such politically motivated persecution targets not only Ukrainian citizens but also Russian nationals who are fighting alongside Ukraine or otherwise support the country.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation explained that the amendments focus, among other things, on cooperation between Interpol's national bureaus and the organization's central structures, as well as the need to prevent the politically motivated use of international wanted notices. During the debate, Ukrainian lawmakers presented specific examples of how Russia exploits international mechanisms to pursue individuals beyond its own borders.
