Tax officials have seized more than ten metric tons of allegedly contraband motor fuel on a freighter docked in the port of Volos, central Greece, authorities said Friday.

The AADE independent tax authority said the marine diesel fuel found on the St Kitts and Nevis-flagged vessel had no legal documentation.

It said that in such cases smugglers typically make a profit off the backs of ship charterers by registering undeclared quantities of fuel as having been used up during voyages, and then illegally selling them on.

The freighter, which was declared as carrying a cargo of metal cylinders, was forbidden to leave port pending the investigation, while the undeclared quantity of fuel was confiscated and a fine of nearly €9,000 imposed.
