Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has warned that Russia could stage a false-flag incident on its own territory as a pretext for escalating military actions against European states, arguing that recent Kremlin messaging points to deliberate information preparation for such a scenario.
In remarks shared on X, Sikorski suggested that Moscow might simulate an attack under a foreign flag inside Russia and then present it as justification for retaliation. “An attack under a foreign flag on Russian territory, to which Putin will ‘respond’,” he wrote, describing it as a potential engineered trigger for escalation.
His comments come after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Russia could respond with strikes against European countries if attacks using drones launched from their territory were directed at Russian targets. Moscow has also accused Baltic states of allegedly concealing drones and attributing them to Ukraine, claims Warsaw views as part of a broader narrative-building effort.
Sikorski compared the potential scenario to historical Nazi Germany tactics, referencing Operation Himmler in 1939, when German forces staged incidents to justify the invasion of Poland. He argued that a similar strategy could be used today to create political justification for expanded conflict with Europe.
