The group expressed particular concern over the sharp increase in the price of cooking gas, claiming that prices had risen by more than 75 per cent within a short period.
The Solidarity Network for Workers Rights (SNWR) has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of worsening the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians through what it described as anti-poor policies that have triggered relentless increases in the prices of fuel, cooking gas, electricity and other essential commodities.
The group also criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), accusing them of failing to move beyond public statements to organise mass resistance against what it called profiteering and exploitation of workers and poor Nigerians.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Lateef Adams, the organisation said the current economic situation had become unbearable for ordinary citizens, noting that the rising cost of living had effectively rendered the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage inadequate.
“The working masses have rarely experienced this kind of economic misery currently confronting the country. Yet, despite the extraordinary increase in the cost of living, workers’ wages remain stagnant and grossly inadequate,” the statement said.
