House Officers in at least eight federal health institutions across Nigeria have joined the nationwide industrial action over the non-payment of two months' salaries, SaharaReporters has learned.
The development has escalated a crisis that is already disrupting healthcare services in government-owned hospitals.
According to sources, the affected institutions include the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH); University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH); Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia; David Umahi University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki; Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi; and FMC Onitsha.
SaharaReporters had previously reported that the strike, which commenced on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, followed the expiration of a one-month ultimatum issued to the Federal Government by the House Officers’ Forum of Nigeria (HOFN) over the prolonged delay in the payment of salaries owed doctors undergoing the mandatory one-year housemanship programme.
The action has partially paralysed activities in several federal health institutions, with affected doctors withdrawing their services after authorities failed to meet a June 23 deadline for the payment of outstanding wages or even engaged them in negotiations.
