TALACOGON, AGUSAN DEL SUR, Philippines — Thousands of mourners joined the final sendoff on Wednesday for Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, the Ateneo de Manila University rookie and rising basketball star from Mindanao whose life was cut short by drowning during a team-building activity in Aurora province.

Many from the huge crowd in the funeral Mass and procession held in Baterbonia’s hometown here came from different parts of the country.

The 18-year-old cager, whose death stirred national grief and calls for accountability, was buried 16 days after the June 8 incident, where fellow Ateneo Blue Eagles player Divine Adili, a 21-year-old Nigerian, also drowned.FEATURED STORIES
