The Independent Iranian Filmmakers Association (IIFMA) has issued a statement warning of the potential execution of Ali Safari, a theater actor and student at the University of Culture and Art.

According to the statement, Ali Safari was arrested during nationwide protests on January 8 in the city of Karaj. Despite months having passed since his detention, no information regarding his case proceedings has been released. However, on January 29, he was formally charged with “Moharebeh” (enmity against God), a charge that has carried severe sentences for several protesters in recent years.

IIFMA further cited a report by “Ebtikar-e Dadgostar” (Justice Initiative), stating that between March 18, 2026, and June 3 alone, at least 40 people were executed in Iran following what it described as “proceedings lacking fair trial standards.”

Pointing to its history of raising awareness about the detention of artists, the association called on international and cinematic organizations to take action regarding the situation of Ali Safari and other imprisoned artists, in order to prevent the issuance of death sentences and increase international pressure.

The Independent Iranian Filmmakers Association (IIFMA) was formed following the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests to reflect the status of artists and oppose censorship and cultural restrictions. The organization emphasized that the ongoing detentions and heavy sentences handed down to artists and protesters have heightened human rights concerns in Iran.
