In a bid to boost local water conservation and agricultural infrastructure, Ramanathapuram District Collector M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, inaugurated the renovation and bund-strengthening works of Komuttiyendhal irrigation tank on Tuesday. The project, located in the Nagaram Panchayat within the Nainarkoil block, was launched during a community event attended by village residents, agricultural workers, and local tank association executives. Aimed at drastically improving long-term water storage and local conservation efforts, the comprehensive engineering plan targets vital structural vulnerabilities in the local ecosystem.Planned works at the Komuttiyendhal tank included deep desilting of the tank bed to expand volumetric capacity, complete structural renovation of aging sluices and surplus weirs, reinforcement and strengthening of the main tank bunds (embankments) to prevent breaches during heavy monsoons. The water restoration initiative is being executed via a collaborative financial model combining corporate backing and grassroots community participation. Of the total estimated project cost of ₹6.48 lakh, the funding has been broken down as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of ₹4.86 lakh from HDB Financial Services (HDFBS) and ₹1.62 lakh as community contribution from the local farmers.Technical expertise and consultation for the infrastructure restoration are being provided by Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), a prominent non-profit organisation specialised in rural development and water management.
