Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has announced six new projects for the residents of Kanniyakumari district, at the welfare aid distribution event held in Nagercoil on Wednesday.Speaking at the event, he said that to meet the drinking water needs of Kanniyakumari municipality, which receives a large number of tourists, a new project will be implemented at a cost ₹28.20 crore to provide additional drinking water from Pazahayar river. Furthermore, a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at an estimated cost of around ₹25 crore would be constructed in the area.Mr. Stalin announced that the long pending demand of Colachel and Mandaikkadu residents to restore the AVM Canal will be addressed at a cost of ₹1.20 crore. Further on the Kanniyakumari-Kaliyakkavilai road, areas with heavy traffic movement would be widened at a cost of ₹9 crore.He added that the St. Mary’s Basilica in Mulagumoodu will be renovated without altering its original appearance at a cost of ₹2 crore.In addition, various financial assistance such as educational aid, marriage assistance and various welfare schemes currently being provided to fishermen and their families through Tamil Nadu Fishermen’s Welfare Board will be increased and detailed governments orders for this will be issued soon.The Chief Minister further announced that in the event of fishermen going missing at sea, the fishermen’s welfare board will provide a monthly allowance of ₹2,000 to the family heirs of the fishermen, until the day they receive relief including insurance.
