The Water Resources Department has commenced renovation works at Mavadi Kulam in Ponmalaipatti, one of the Tiruchi’s largest waterbodies, aiming to restore its storage capacity after years of neglect.Spread across 142 acres, Mavadi Kulam has traditionally served as a vital irrigation source for agricultural fields in the region. However, poor maintenance and the discharge of untreated wastewater over the years have led to the proliferation of weeds and water hyacinth, severely affecting the tank’s ecosystem and water-holding capacity.Although restoration initiatives were undertaken in previous years to improve groundwater recharge and create recreational spaces, inadequate upkeep limited their long-term benefits. As part of the ongoing renovation, excavators have been deployed to remove dense vegetation and water hyacinth that obstruct the natural flow of water, and efforts are underway to strengthen the tank bunds. Desilting work is planned to enhance the waterbody’s storage potential.Officials said the restoration measures would increase the tank’s capacity to retain rainwater, helping conserve more water during the monsoon season and improving groundwater recharge.Environmental activist K.C. Neelamegam welcomed the long-awaited initiative, noting that restoring the tank would improve water flow and significantly benefit both residents and the farming community. He pointed out that despite water levels rising during heavy rains, much of the water is currently wasted due to inadequate maintenance.“Steps should be taken to prevent sewage inflow and garbage dumping into the tank and ensure regular upkeep of the water body. The authorities should explore options to develop a walking track around the tank, which could transform Mavadi Kulam into a recreational spot for the public,” he said.
