Work on the renovation of the Arumbavur Big Lake, one of the biggest irrigation tanks in Perambalur district, is likely to be completed by September.The Water Resources Department (WRD) had taken up renovation of the waterbody at an estimated cost of ₹3.41 crore.Situated at Arumbavur village in Veppanthattai taluk in the district, the tank has a storage capacity of 52.63 million cubic feet of water. With a water spread area of about 220.40 acres, the maximum water storage level in the tank is 3.75 metres. The tank has an ayacut of 563.33 acres.The tank gets inflows from the Kallar flowing from Pachamalai hills. The surplus flows from Arumbavur big lake flows into Arumbavur small lake.Although the work is scheduled to be completed within 18 months from the date of award of the contract, WRD authorities said that efforts were made to complete the work by September, including the reconstruction of the tank sluices, unless there was some major interruptions due to monsoon rains.District Collector Sharnya Ari too inspected the progress of work recently and instructed officials to complete them ahead of the monsoon.CSR initiativesThe district administration has roped in private companies to sponsor the deepening and desilting of a few water bodies in the district under their corporate social responsibility initiatives. Ms.Sharanya Ari flagged off the works on the Nakka Salem and Nochikulam lakes. The Nakka Salem lake is spread over 118 acres with a capacity to store 2 tmcft. of water.
