Hellenic Post (ELTA) is facing a protracted financial crisis. Losses have been accumulating for a number of years, despite continuous restructuring efforts. After a €28.7 million loss recorded in 2023, the following year posted an €8.3 million loss.
On a monthly basis, the organization is still losing around €3 million, with the ongoing reorganization since 2016 having so far failed to reverse the downward trend. The question of the viability and role of ELTA in the modern era remains open.
New debate on its operational adequacy and prospects was sparked by an internal email sent on June 11 by the Human Resources Directorate to executives and administrative employees. In the message, they were invited to participate voluntarily, for a day, in parcel distribution with the aim of decongesting a specific area.
Sources close to ELTA, responding to the criticism on the initiative, argue that the move was not primarily aimed at covering operational gaps. They acknowledge, however, that the involvement of executives in the distribution cannot be a solution to the problems of delays. “Obviously this is not a permanent answer to the issue of timely deliveries,” they note.
