RULAAC blasted DSS for turning the courtroom into a “theatre of intimidation and oppression”, describing the incident as a “vengeful, lawless and undemocratic assault on the rule of law.”

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has strongly condemned the forceful abduction of human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) from the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

RULAAC blasted DSS for turning the courtroom into a “theatre of intimidation and oppression”, describing the incident as a “vengeful, lawless and undemocratic assault on the rule of law.”

In a statement issued on Monday by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, the group said the actions of the secret police amount to “a brazen affront to the authority of the court, a dangerous violation of due process, and a deeply troubling display of institutional lawlessness.”

“A courtroom is the very symbol of justice and the rule of law. For security operatives to allegedly invade that space and seize a litigant contrary to the apparent terms of a court order amounts to contempt for judicial authority and an attack on constitutional democracy,” the group said.
