Two University of KwaZulu-Natal students won silver medals at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championship Combat Games, held in Brazil last week.
Dhruv Heeralal and Sohail Ramruthan returned to South Africa last week following their impressive achievement, becoming part of the first South African team to secure a medal at the prestigious event. The FISU Combat Games feature a range of disciplines, including karate, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, wrestling and wushu.
The duo formed part of the 12-member South African team that competed at the championships. As the country’s sole representatives in the Team Kata division, the semi-contact karate black belts delivered an exceptional performance to finish as runners-up in their category.
Kata is a choreographed sequence of movements used in martial arts such as karate and judo, designed to demonstrate techniques for defence against multiple attackers.
