Germany is currently “the real pivot” of European rearmament, says former NATO Assistant Secretary General Missiroli

Germany has become the “real pivot” of any future European fighter jet programme, according to a former NATO Assistant Secretary General, as Leonardo’s CEO floats the idea of Berlin’s participation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

Antonio Missiroli, former director of the EU Institute for Security Studies and former NATO assistant secretary seneral, told Euractiv that as “Germany is the central player in European rearmament, having it on board probably represents an additional asset in winning this competition”.

The comments come as Leonardo has opened the door to German participation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), following the collapse of the rival Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

The prospect of Germany joining GCAP is not new, as Leonardo’s former chief executive, Roberto Cingolani, had already raised the possibility.
