Police said Sunday they have solved a €100,000 armed robbery that targeted an elderly man in Athens last month and was allegedly masterminded by a relative of the victim.
A police statement said the 51-year-old suspect was linked with the May 6 robbery in the northern suburb of Kifissia with the help of footage from cameras, and despite efforts to avoid detection that included a day’s abstinence from using his mobile phone.
The suspect was arrested last week and faces charges including belonging to a criminal group, money-laundering, theft and robbery.
Police said the suspect allegedly knew that his 77-year-old relative had a large quantity of valuable jewellery in his apartment’s safe and staged the robbery with an associate.
