Thoothukudi traffic police seized 35 motorcycles with modified silencers from college students and imposed fines of nearly ₹1.45 lakh, during a surprise vehicle inspection conducted near Millerpuram and Third Mile, on Thursday. The sight of youngsters riding high capacity motorcycles or bikes fitted with modified silencer, often carrying three to four persons on a single two-wheeler, has become increasingly common in Thoothukudi, especially in college zones such as Millerpuram and Third Mile.Often unaware of the risks involved, many students violate traffic regulations, causing inconvenience to the public and posing safety hazards to the riders. To address this issue, traffic wing police conducted a special inspection drive near VOC College and Government Polytechnic College.During the inspection, police detected several violations, including triple and quadruple riding, failure to possess valid documents and non-compliance with helmet regulations. In addition, several two-wheelers were found with modified silencers, that produce excessive noise, while riding. An official from the Thoothukudi traffic wing said that such enforcement drives have been planned to be conducted three times a week, with special focus on students and bikes fitted with unauthorised and modified silencers. He added that several students from polytechnic college are underage riders, stressing that strict monitoring would be be continued to curb such violations. He noted that around 35 bikes were seized and fines were imposed on the violators. The vehicles were released only after the students’ parents arrived and the riders were counselled on traffic safety and road regulations. He added that a similar enforcement drive would be carried out across the city, and strict action would be taken against anyone found violating traffic rules.
