Public health authorities in Varna have introduced a temporary ban on swimming at Ofitserski Beach (Officer's Beach) after laboratory tests detected elevated levels of fecal contamination indicators, including Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci.

According to the Regional Health Inspectorate, routine summer monitoring of bathing waters revealed that conditions at the site currently present a potential health risk for swimmers. The findings prompted an immediate administrative response from health officials overseeing coastal water safety.

Following the results, the inspectorate issued a directive to the regional governor requiring the implementation of mandatory hygiene and anti-epidemic measures aimed at reducing public exposure to contaminated seawater.

Authorities also instructed that clear and permanent warning signage must be placed in a visible location on the beach, explicitly notifying visitors that swimming is temporarily prohibited due to health concerns.

The measures are part of standard seasonal monitoring procedures along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, where water quality is regularly assessed during the peak summer period to ensure compliance with public health standards.
