Varna authorities have launched a public procurement procedure to secure lifeguard services for eight unguarded beaches along Bulgaria’s Northern Black Sea coast for the 2026 summer season, the regional governor announced, as reported by BGNES. The plan covers sites across the municipalities of Varna, Avren, Dolni Chiflik, and Byala.

The initiative comes amid rising costs for coastal safety operations. According to the latest Bulgarian Red Cross report, the price of maintaining a single lifeguard post for a three-month period has reached around 17,000 euros excluding VAT, compared with roughly 30,000 leva last year, indicating a notable increase in expenses ahead of the summer season.

A total of 27 beaches in the Varna region will remain without permanent lifeguard coverage in 2026, unchanged from the previous year. From this list, eight locations have been selected for staffing after an evaluation of past tenders, on-site inspections by a regional commission, and input from municipal authorities.

The designated beaches include Fichoza Beach (section 2) in Varna municipality; Romantika, Kamchia-North 1, and Kamchia-North 4 in Avren municipality; Shkorpilovtsi North in Dolni Chiflik municipality; and Byala-Kara Dere, Byala-Central 3, and Byala-Central 4 in Byala municipality.
