The affected Malawians had reportedly been displaced by the violence and had sought refuge at the Cape Agulhas Municipality Town Hall in Cape Town and Sherwood Town Hall in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The Malawian government has begun the evacuation of 1260 of its citizens from South Africa following an ongoing intensified vigilante attacks on foreign nationals, particularly African migrants in parts of the country.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Malawi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, eight buses carrying 560 Malawians left South Africa on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, under a voluntary repatriation exercise.
The ministry disclosed that another 10 buses transporting 700 Malawians were scheduled to depart South Africa on Thursday, June 18, bringing the total number of evacuees to 1260.
