The Republic of Malawi has commenced the emergency mass evacuation of its citizens fleeing coordinated and targeted anti-migrant violence in South Africa against foreign nationals especially Africans.

The Malawian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation confirmed on Monday that a tightly secured convoy of eight buses loaded with 645 traumatised Malawian nationals had officially departed South African territory.

According to an official press release issued from Capital Hill, Lilongwe, shared on X handle on Monday, the evacuees are part of a thousands-strong population of African migrants who were displaced from their homes and businesses by armed local mobs.

They had been surviving under desperate conditions at a makeshift refugee camp setup inside the Sherwood Town Hall in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The emergency overland convoy is scheduled to cross into Malawi via the Mwanza Border Post on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. From there, the state will transport the returnees directly to the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre for biometric screening, immediate medical triage, trauma profiling, and eventual reintegration into their respective local destinations.
