The Malawian government has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign to finance the evacuation and reintegration of an estimated 10,000 citizens seeking to return home from South Africa amid growing fears over anti-immigrant violence and insecurity.
The appeal, described by authorities as one of the country's largest humanitarian rescue efforts in recent years, comes as thousands of Malawians stranded across South Africa continue to register for voluntary repatriation following weeks of attacks and intimidation targeting foreign nationals.
In a statement issued, Malawi's Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said the scale of the crisis has overwhelmed available resources, forcing the government to seek financial and logistical support from development partners, businesses, religious organisations, transport operators, and members of the public.
According to the agency, the operation involves not only transporting thousands of citizens back home but also providing emergency shelter, food, medical care, psychosocial support, and reintegration assistance upon arrival.
