eThekwini Municipality has recommissioned the oThongathi Crematorium following a R6 million refurbishment aimed at restoring critical cremation services and addressing infrastructure backlogs in the city.
The eThekwini Municipality has announced the recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium as part of efforts to restore essential public services and address ageing infrastructure challenges.
The facility had experienced prolonged service disruptions due to broken and malfunctioning furnaces, which caused significant inconvenience to affected communities.
More than R6 million was invested to replace the faulty furnace infrastructure. The installation, testing and commissioning of new equipment has now restored full cremation services at the facility.
Mayor Cyril Xaba said the reopening represents more than the return of a municipal service, but also the restoration of dignity for communities.
