The eThekwini Municipality has allocated R31 million to complete crucial roadworks on Old North Coast Road. Work stopped in May 2026 after contractors exhausted the allocated budget of R222.9 million.
eThekwini councillors slammed the municipality over contract management and shifting R31 million from other delayed projects to complete the Old North Coast Road upgrades.
The R222.9 million road upgrade and widening in Glen Anil (Phase 1) was set to be completed by June 2026. However, the project came to a halt in May 2026, as the contractor required R31 million to complete it.
The municipality has reprioritised R8.5 million from Brickworks phase 2, a further R2 million from the Oceans Umhlanga alternative Public Transport Facility (PTF) development, and R20.5 million from the Cornubia Boulevard phase 1 project, which was delayed due to procurement challenges.
The municipality explained in its report to council, on Thursday, that the second phase of the Old North Coast Road (Brickworks) project, which falls under the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, was also delayed.
