The rehabilitation of Dr Pixley KaSeme Street (formerly West Street) is progressing well and remains on track for completion in mid-June as part of eThekwini Municipality's Inner-City Road Rehabilitation Programme.
A report before the council revealed that the eThekwini Roads Department is not meeting the required standard, as evidenced by the performance reports.
This was the view of the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee when it motivated for the reprioritisation and transfer of R41.4 million in unspent funds to projects within the Roads Provision Directorate (RP) and the Coastal, Stormwater and Catchment Management (CSCM) Department for projects requiring funding within the same departments.
During the implementation of the 2025/26 capital budget, unspent funds were identified on certain roads provision projects due to factors such as completed procurement processes, resulting in lower tendered amounts, project implementation delays, revised project scopes, and efficiencies realised during execution.
At the same time, several priority roads rehabilitation projects within the department have experienced budgetary shortfalls arising from increased construction costs, additional rehabilitation requirements identified during implementation, and unforeseen site conditions that required intervention to ensure project completion.
