The eThekwini Municipality's Recreation and Parks Directorate stated that they do not have a backlog with funerals related to the Indigent Burial policy.
The eThekwini Municipality told a council meeting that it had assisted 26 families through the Indigent Burial policy since June 2026.
The municipality’s Recreation and Parks Directorate was responding to four questions raised about the burial policy by DA Ward 66 Councillor Zoe Solomon on Thursday.
Solomon explained to the media that she had a resident whose children had been placed in welfare because of abject poverty and lack of support.
“One issue was her health, which was fading, and she just didn't get the help she needed. She passed away at the hospital, and her family phoned me from Gauteng to please assist with the indigent burial. They would raise money for a bus to fetch the ashes,” Solomon explained.
