The eThekwini Municipality has recommissioned the oThongathi Crematorium following a R6 million refurbishment aimed at restoring critical cremation services and addressing infrastructure backlogs in the city.

THE Tongaat Crematorium has reopened after a R6 million refurbishment, but funeral parlour associations are left waiting for full operational status as only private cremations are being conducted initially

The facility, which was closed for about three years due to broken and malfunctioning furnaces, was opened last Friday.

This move brings back essential services to the local community, saving grieving families from exhorbitant traveling costs to alternative sites.

The city had allocated over R6 million for the facility to replace malfunctioning furnaces and end long-standing service disruptions.
