Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, wellness advocates and Gauteng residents are expected to descend on the Randburg Cricket Club on Saturday, June 20, for one of Africa’s largest International Day of Yoga celebrations.
Hosted by the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg, the event will offer free yoga sessions, wellness activities, health screenings and cultural showcases, with members of the public invited to participate at no cost.
The celebration forms part of the United Nations-backed International Day of Yoga, observed annually in more than 190 countries. Since the UN proclaimed 21 June as International Day of Yoga in 2014, the ancient Indian practice has evolved into a global wellness movement promoting physical and mental well-being. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the role of yoga in supporting lifelong health and active living. Organisers say the practice offers an accessible way to improve physical fitness, reduce stress and promote mental resilience across all age groups.
Over the past decade, Johannesburg’s International Day of Yoga event has grown into one of the continent’s largest public wellness gatherings, attracting participants from diverse cultural, religious and social backgrounds.
