The first pink police booth of the State was launched in Ponneri under the Avadi Police Commissionerate on Thursday.According to the police, the booth located near the Government Girls Higher Secondary School will have 12 CCTV cameras for surveillance. It was set up following complaints about eve teasing from girl students in the school.The local women inaugurated the booth in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Rajasekaran.It is expected to strengthen round-the-clock surveillance in the area comprising 15 village panchayats..S. Tamil Anban, Inspector of Police, E1 Ponneri Police Station, who is one of the officials behind the project, said: “The pink police booth will also have a library. We intend to get books on ethics and competitive exams. Those preparing for the TNPSC Group I, Group II and Group IV will be permitted to visit the library”Pointing to the need for sensitising students to the challenges faced by girls in suburban villages, Mr. Tamil Anban said: “Girl students will be able to visit the pink police booth without the fear associated with visiting a traditional police station.” Published - June 13, 2026 12:54 am IST
