Two police teams have begun their “operations to prevent crimes against women and children” here under the Singapenn Task Force in Krishnagiri on Thursday (June 11).The preventive policing operations began a day after the task force, comprising two teams of three policewomen each, was formed on Wednesday. Each team is led by a Sub-Inspector of Police and has an SUV with a driver. The teams operate on shifts: when one team is out patrolling a police subdivision, the other will operate as a static unit. The first team will patrol from 7 a.m. till noon, and the second from 2 p.m to midnight. The hours between midnight and 7 a.m. will be resting hours for the two teams. After completing her first patrol of the Hosur police subdivision as part of the task force, Sub-Inspector M. Jothi, who heads one of the teams, told to The Hindu that the focus would be on prevention. Crime dossiers on specific areas have already been shared by police stations in the district. The teams will also take assistance from the Revenue Department regarding such matters as installation of streetlights. The teams, however, are yet to get their dedicated mobile phones and helpline numbers. Until then, regular policing SOS numbers [100 (police control room), 1098 (childline), 112 (integrated number) and 181 (womens’ helpline] will be used as the primary numbers. The teams will patrol bus stands, railway stations, colleges and schools as preventive action. “If there is a case of “eve teasing” (women harassment), we will be alerted. If the patrol team is far from the spot, local police stations will swing into action,” said Ms. Jothi. “We have collected information on the ‘hot spots’ for crimes, including harassment,” she added.Given that the district has 38 police stations, including five all-women police stations, the Singapenn Task Force currently sees itself as patrolling and awareness units.
