Following the launch of the Singappen Special Force (SSF) by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, the Tiruchi City Police rolled out the initiative in the city on Wednesday with a focus on enhancing the safety and security of women in public spaces.Commissioner of Police N. Kamini flagged off the patrol vehicles and instructed the personnel to remain vigilant while carrying out their duties. As part of the initiative, two dedicated SSF teams have been constituted for Tiruchi North and Tiruchi South. Each team consists of three women police personnel and a driver, will patrol in shifts.“Hotspots in both zones, including areas where crimes against women and children have been reported or are considered vulnerable, have been identified for focused monitoring. Emergency calls related to women’s safety received through the police helpline 100, and the Police Control Room would be diverted to the SSF teams for prompt response and assistance,” Ms. Kamini told The Hindu. She added that awareness campaigns would also be conducted as part of the initiative.Meanwhile, in Ariyalur district, the SSF was launched by Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramaniam at the central bus stand. Addressing the gathering, he explained the objectives of the initiative and outlined the activities to be undertaken by the force.The force has been established exclusively to ensure the safety and security of women. SSF teams will function in two shifts, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m, and will undertake intensive patrols in locations frequently visited by women, including bus stands, schools, colleges, temples, railway stations and marketplaces.He said women facing any form of difficulty or distress could directly approach SSF personnel for assistance.
