Madurai City Commissioner of Police Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar here on Wednesday flagged off two vehicles for the Singappen Special Force.Speaking at the event, Mr. Saratkar highlighted that measures to protect women and children were already under way. He emphasised that Tamil Nadu has always been a pioneer in implementing such innovative safety initiatives.“Women currently make up 30% of the State’s total police force,” he noted. For Madurai city, the Singappen Special Force would initially comprise four Sub-Inspectors and eight women officers. These personnel would be divided into four teams—two deployed in the North zone and two in the South. The selected officers underwent a rigorous five-day training program designed to sensitise them to a wide range of women’s issues, while also equipping them with hard skills like unarmed combat.“The personnel were extensively trained in crucial soft skills, such as answering emergency calls, calming down distressed individuals, and tactfully handling women and child victims during crisis situations,” he added.Further, the women officers were thoroughly briefed on relevant legal frameworks, including sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, the POCSO Act, and other essential legal terminology, he said.To boost safety and confidence among women, patrolling teams would continuously monitor high-traffic areas, including schools, colleges, bus stands, railway stations, and IT parks. He noted that these specific locations were earmarked to intensify policing efforts. In the event of any crime against women or children, these teams will serve as the first responders to handle the complaints. Published - June 10, 2026 07:56 pm IST
