The ‘Singappenn’ police force, an elite all-women police force to deal with crime and against women and the children along the roads and the public places, was launched formally on Wednesday.After a small group of working women and the girl students cut the cake, the elite force was launched in the presence of V. Prassannakumar, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli.“Their visible presence in the public places, near schools, colleges, places of worship, markets, bus-stands, railway stations etc. will encourage the women and the children distress to seek the help ‘Singappenn’ police in case of any threatening situation,” said Dr. Prassannakumar, after the elite force was flagged off at Thaazhaiyooththu on Tirunelveli outskirts on Wednesday evening.Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Vijayakumar, launched 2 teams of ‘Singappenn’ elite force on Wednesday evening, which will be deployed in Tirunelveli city having 8 police stations. Each team will function under a woman Sub-Inspector of Police.When Mr. Vijayakumar was returning to office after the launch of the special team, he had to chase 3 youth riding on a bike at lightning speed without helmet to stop them. Their ‘heroics’ on the busy Thiruvananthapuram High Road came to an end near CSI Trinity Cathedral as Mr. Vijayakumar’s vehicle intercepted their bike.The trio was warned and booked for rash driving, 3 riding on a two-wheeler and riding the bike without helmet.
