Coimbatore district secured the first rank in Tamil Nadu in the transition of government school students to higher education for the academic year 2024-25, according to the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Reconciliation Report.Of the 11,058 students who completed Class 12 in government schools in the district, 10,555 enrolled in higher education institutions, resulting in an enrolment rate of 95.45%. The district outperformed the State average of 91.92%.The report showed that only 503 students from the cohort had not enrolled in higher education as of the reconciliation exercise carried out up to June 4, 2026.A majority of the students, numbering 9,803, were tracked through the University Management Information System (UMIS), indicating their admission to higher education programmes. Another 869 students were identified and verified through follow-up surveys conducted by headmasters.The report also recorded admissions through other channels, including the Uyarvukku Padi counselling camps, through which 78 students entered higher education. A small number of students were tracked through admissions to polytechnic colleges, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and government arts and science colleges.The district’s performance placed it at the top among the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu in terms of higher education enrolment among government school students.Officials attributed the achievement to sustained counselling, follow-up measures and efforts to facilitate admissions to colleges and other higher education institutions.
