Deputy Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Stefanos Gkikas on Thursday visited Pier 6 at Thessaloniki Port, describing it as a “true revolution in engineering” and the biggest private project under construction in Greece.
During a visit to the Thessaloniki Port Authority, he was given a tour of the facilities and got briefed on the progress of the project, which is expected to transform the port and its capabilities.
He said a major milestone in the project, whose total budget could exceed €250 million, is the placing of the first big caisson that will be part of the new port infrastructure in July, saying it was encouraging that the project is making steady progress.
The minister noted the significance of extending Pier 6 for the entire Thessaloniki region and northern Greece, adding that Thessaloniki port is a strategic priority for the ministry as it is one of the most important transport hubs in the country and in southeastern Europe.
