Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis visited the Port of Thessaloniki, where he was welcomed by the Chief Executive Officer of ThPA S.A., Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, and senior executives of the Company.During his visit, he toured the Pier 6 construction site and was briefed on the progress of the works of its Expansion Project, which is the largest and most significant development project in the Port’s history and an investment of strategic importance for Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, and the national economy. The key technical specifications of the new Container Terminal, and the upgraded role that the Port of Thessaloniki is expected to play in regional and international supply chains following the completion of the project, were presented.Emphasis was placed on the investment’s contribution to strengthening the Port’s potential and competitiveness, along with the broader socio-economic benefits generated for the city, Northern Greece, and the country. Discussions also focused on the prospects for the further development of the Port of Thessaloniki as a key gateway for trade, transport, and logistics for Southeastern and Central Europe, and on its role within the framework of European transport corridors and the strengthening of the wider region’s connectivity.The Management of ThPA S.A. also presented the current investments in equipment, infrastructure, buildings, and digital applications, aimed at improving operational efficiency, upgrading the services provided, and further modernizing the Port. In this context, the issues discussed included the importance of ThPA S.A.’s long-term investment plan for the overall development prospects of Thessaloniki and Northern Greece, along with the contribution of the Port of Thessaloniki to the establishment of a modern, competitive, and sustainable intermodal hub.During his tour, Hatzidakis stated: “The Port of Thessaloniki has begun to fulfill its developmental role. The construction of Pier 6, combined with the ongoing railway connection, are two projects with significant added value for the further development of the Port and the city of Thessaloniki, but not only. Such projects contribute substantially to strengthening Greece’s position in the Balkans and the Southeastern Mediterranean.” On the occasion of the Vice President of the Government’s visit, the CEO of ThPA S.A., Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, stated: “The visit of the Vice President of the Government to the Port of Thessaloniki, at a time of historic transformation of the port, reaffirms the importance of ThPA S.A.’s strategic investment program. The expansion of Pier 6, which is driving this transformation in the most dynamic way, is a project of national and regional significance, as it substantially enhances Thessaloniki’s role as a gateway for trade and intermodal transport for Southeastern and Central Europe. The full benefit of this investment depends on the timely completion of the Port’s critical connectivity projects and on the resolution of pending issues that affect the project’s smooth implementation. At the same time, the strategic utilization of the Port’s significant building stock, in direct proximity to the historical center, serves as a driver of urban regeneration for Thessaloniki, creating new uses, activities, and prospects for the city. With the steadfast support of the State, the Port of Thessaloniki will achieve its multidimensional development and fully respond to the developmental role it is called upon to play for the economy, society, and Northern Greece.”
