In the port of Elefsina, western Attica, multinational giants and domestic groups are claiming investments in port infrastructure, storage facilities and shipyards, a sum reaching €1 billion.
However, at the bottom of the Gulf of Elefsina there are 34 shipwrecks that will need to be removed in order for the port to operate. Such is the case of the half-sunk Mediterranean Sky, originally known as City of York (pictured).
For now, some have simply been fitted with light beacons for navigation safety. For others, tenders have been held and a contractor has been selected to remove them, though many other tenders have been declared fruitless.
