A total of 440 government school students got admissions to arts and science colleges, polytechnic institutions, and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) during the School Education Department’s Kalloori Kanavu camp held in Coimbatore city on Wednesday (June 10).A total of 373 students secured admissions to arts and science colleges, 43 joined polytechnic institutions and 24 enrolled in ITIs.Addressing the participants, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said every student completing Class 12 should pursue higher education. He noted that many talented individuals in previous generations missed out on opportunities for higher studies owing to a lack of awareness and access. Programmes such as Kalloori Kanavu were intended to bridge that gap.“The course we choose after Class 12 can become the foundation for our future. This is a crucial stage in life,” he said.Pointing out that the district has over 180 colleges, he said the administration’s objective was to ensure that all Class 12 students in the district pursued higher education.Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said students often faced competing advice while making academic choices. College was not merely a place to earn a degree but an environment where students could discover their interests, develop their abilities and shape their aspirations, he said.Over 1,000 students attended the camp and visited 40 stalls set up by government, government-aided and private engineering, arts and science, polytechnic and ITI institutions.A handbook containing details of courses, admission requirements, cut-off marks and colleges in the district was released and distributed to students. Banks and educational institutions also provided information on scholarships and educational loans.Moverover, around 550 students received counselling on higher education opportunities, and 40 students submitted applications for scholarships.
