The two government arts and science colleges in Coimbatore city continue to attract thousands of candidates from across the State.The number of applications for the 23 UG programmes offered through the Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, has risen to 37,398 for the 2026-27 session. Of them, 19,483 applicants are men, 17,894 women, and 21 applicants are transgenders.The highest number of 8,763 applications are for B.Sc. Computer Science, followed by 8,061 applications for BBA Shift I, and 7,631 for Tamil Shift I, Principal M.R. Yezhili said.Last year, too, the demand was for computer and computer-based courses including B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Information Technology and B.Com Computer Applications.There were 33,753 applicants last year, which was substantially lesser than over 36,000 applications the previous year.All through the years, the college has been the second-most preferred choice, next only to the Presidency Arts and Science College, Chennai.In view of the high number of applicants, the Government Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, has fixed stiff cut-off for the first round of admissions.For all other departments except Tamil and English, candidates with cut off of 300 and above out of 400, calculated for the rest of the four subjects, have been called for admission counselling, on June 8, and those with 260 and above have been invited for the counselling on June 9.Like last year, for admission in B.A. Tamil and English programmes, the college has fixed 50 marks and above in the subject concerned. Last year, candidates with scores above 75 in Tamil and 60 in English in Plus Two were called for first counselling.Likewise, there are over 11,000 applicants this year for 410 seats in eight UG programmes at the Government Arts and Science College for Women.B.A. Tamil, B.A. English, B.Sc. Computer Science, and B.Sc. Mathematics are offered in shift 1, and B.A. Economics, B.Com and B.Sc.
